Get a better understanding of the importance of public education at the Aug. 11 Sun Lakes Democratic Club (SLDC) meeting from Dr. Teresa Leyba Ruiz, a third generation Arizonan running in the 2026 primary for the Democratic nomination for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Dr. Ruiz, whose educational journey included K-12 and then undergraduate and graduate degrees from Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University, recognizes the important role public schools have played in advancing our country. And as the eighth president of Glendale Community College, Dr. Ruiz also understands the administrative end of education and the influence political efforts have on our educational system.

Joining Dr. Ruiz on the docket that evening is San Marcos District Justice of the Peace Jennifer Jermaine. Dr. Jermaine, whose district includes Sun Lakes and portions of Chandler, will discuss the office, the cases that come before it, and the increased workload due to current policies at the state and federal level. Jermaine will be seeking re-election in the 2026 election.

Those attending the meeting in the Navajo Room of Sun Lakes Country Club will also receive an update from a representative of the Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) on the bond election scheduled for this fall. Sun Lakes residents, along with those living in portions of Gilbert, Queen Creek, and Chandler, are part of CUSD and will receive a ballot in the mail for the bond election.

Besides our featured speakers, various candidates running in the 2026 Primary and/or General Election may drop by, so monthly meetings of the SLDC are a great opportunity to meet the candidates. We look forward to meeting or greeting you as well.

SLDC is made up of like-minded individuals who are part of over 2,500 registered Democrats throughout the Sun Lakes area promoting an Arizona that works for everyone. We invite you to join us at 6:30 p.m. for a social hour, with the meeting starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club at 25601 E. Sun Lakes Blvd N., Sun Lakes. We also invite you to join us at 10 a.m. for our First Friday Coffee the first Friday of every month at Denny’s at 4977 S. Arizona Avenue in Chandler.

We support Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank. Donations can be dropped off at the meeting or made online at matthewscrossing.org. You can receive a receipt for the dollar-for-dollar, tax deductible donation.
