Blanca Sanchez, Desert Threads Quilt Chapter of AQG
Hello Quilty Friends,
We have been reading about vintage quilt blocks, such as the Kansas City Star in the past month’s article. Today, I’d like to share with you some more interesting and motivating inspiration about nostalgic vintage quilt patterns. In the link below, you’ll learn about popular vintage patterns from decades ago. What I enjoyed about this article, written in 2023 by Miriam Ronne for Quiltdom, were the pictures of all the types of vintage quilts and patterns and how we can utilize our modern-day fabrics to make our own vintage quilts. I hope you enjoy perusing through this article and all of the interesting information: quiltdom.com/vintage-quilt-patterns.
Fat Quarter Shop also has some free vintage patterns as well if you’d like to look: fatquartershop.com.
From Jody Edwards:
Desert Threads Quilting group is having a UFO Challenge for the 2025-26 season. In quilting, a UFO refers to an Unfinished Object. With so many beautiful fabrics and quilting patterns out there and the many different steps it takes to complete a quilt, it’s a little difficult for many quilters to stay focused and get projects completed. And then there are those special occasions that pop up: new babies, weddings, anniversaries, college graduations, etc., all of which can interrupt our current projects to start a new project as a gift (with a deadline). For various reasons, many quilters seem to have UFOs hanging around. Each quarter, between March 31, 2025, and March 31, 2026, Desert Threads members will have the chance to enter and win a quarterly prize. Our first quarterly drawing was held on June 30.
Congratulations to all our UFO Challenge participants. The winner of the first quarterly drawing held on June 30 is Denise Farnworth!
We had 14 quilters participating in the first quarter challenge, and I’m so impressed with all the projects that have gotten completed since January. Here is a list of quilters who completed projects for this quarter drawing (in no particular order):
Terry Findlay: 5 projects
Pam Matassarin: 3 projects
Denise Farnworth: 4 projects
Debbie Kattelman: 1 project
Blanca Sanchez: 5 projects
Jackie Fife: 1 project
Barb Brandt: 1 project
Ann Wasecha: 1 project
Nancy Starkey: 5 projects
The fine print: For this challenge, a UFO is any project actually started prior to Jan. 1, 2025. All participants must complete the Challenge Log sheet and send it to the challenge coordinator prior to the beginning of the next quarter start date. Each completed project measuring less than 40 inches in at least one direction will count for one entry into the drawing. Each completed project measuring over 40 by 40 inches will count for two entries into the drawing.
A spreadsheet is created with all completed entries, randomized by sorting the list by completion date, and a random number generator is used to choose the line number from the spreadsheet. The more entries you have, the more chances you have to win. Uncompleted projects remaining on the Challenge Log sheet are all eligible for the Q2 drawing and beyond.
If you are interested in joining the UFO Challenge, please contact Jody Edwards or Jackie Fife at info@desertthreads.org for the information needed.
