As October approaches, we look forward to the coming of cooler weather and to new photographic opportunities during the first season for our club under its new name.
Our first meeting for this season will be on Oct. 2 and will include a presentation by Joanne West. Joanne gave a presentation two years ago that was so enthusiastically received by our members that I had to invite her back. She has a gallery in Gold Canyon, exhibits her work widely, and is a totally engaging speaker.
It’s certainly not too early to begin thinking about photos that you might wish to enter in some of our upcoming competitions. East Valley Photo Club’s (EVPC) first competition will be held on Oct. 23, and its categories are Open, Mono, Nature, and Night Scenes. Arizona Camera Club Council’s (ACCC) Fall Roundup will be held at the Palm Ridge Ballroom in Sun City West on Nov. 15. The guest speaker for that event will be Tom Klare. Tom was a commercial photographer for 20 years and taught digital photography and postproduction in the Digital Arts Program at Mesa Community College. The topic for his presentation will be “Lightroom and Photoshop for Photographers.” All EVPC members are entitled to enter photos in that competition. The entry deadline for submissions in both print and digital formats is Oct. 18, with the first entry date for submissions yet to be determined. EVPC is also a member of the Photographic Society of America (PSA), which holds Interclub competitions three times yearly, with the entry deadline for fall club submissions being Nov. 15. Further information for that competition will be forthcoming from our PSA Interclub coordinator Raul Lopez.
The East Valley Photo Club welcomes new members from any geographical area. Our membership includes folks having a full range of skill levels from beginners to advanced. There are no equipment requirements, as our focus is producing fine photos, whether taken with a smartphone or the latest mirrorless camera. In short, the only requirement for membership is an interest in photography. EVPC offers many educational opportunities to our members, including monthly presentations by speakers on a variety of photography topics, as well as photography classes that are available to both members and non-members alike.
EVPC will have a display at all three of the Community Days in October. Please stop by and say hello and pick up information on our club.
The East Valley Photo Club meets on the first and third Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Navajo Room of Sun Lakes Country Club from October through April.
