Sun Lakes’ vibrant community is celebrating one of its own—Patti Ann Saxon, affectionately known as “Gramma Patti,” who has just released a new children’s book, Plaid Bear TM, at the remarkable age of 90. A resident of Oakwood Sun Lakes for 25 years, Patti proves that creativity and passion know no age limits.
Patti’s literary journey began in the 1980s when she authored her first children’s book, Pea Pod Pop-Ups, copyrighted in 1985. Her love for storytelling blossomed into a successful career with the beloved Pea Pod Kids series and collaborations with Putnam Publishing and Boyd Mills Press where she contributed to the world of children’s pop-up books. Now, decades later, she’s returned to delight young readers once again.
Published on June 10, 2025, Plaid Bear TM invites readers into a heartwarming adventure. Set on a bookshelf in a young girl’s bedroom, Plaid Bear, a distinctive teddy with a beautiful plaid pattern, realizes he doesn’t remember his name or origin. Unlike his five bear friends, each with unique backstories, Plaid Bear embarks on a journey to unravel his own.
As Plaid Bear ventures into self-discovery, he’s supported by his loyal companions whose distinct personalities add charm and depth to the narrative. Their adventure isn’t just about Plaid Bear’s past; it’s a touching lesson on embracing one’s uniqueness, the power of friendship, and the importance of belonging.
Readers of all ages have been enchanted by Plaid Bear TM. One grandmother shared her delight after reading it with her grandsons, praising its beautiful illustrations and heartfelt storyline. Another reader recounted how her sister, a retired teacher, was so captivated by the book that she inadvertently took it home—an amusing testament to its irresistible charm.
The story resonates with many, evoking nostalgic memories of childhood friendships and the universal search for identity. As one reader fondly recalled, Plaid Bear TM took her back to her own childhood, feeling a sense of belonging among friends, regardless of differences.
Patti collaborated with co-author and longtime friend Florence Petheram, also in her 90s. The book is beautifully illustrated by Taylor Bills, known for his cinematic storytelling and visual artistry. Since his first publication, Tear Soup: A Recipe for Healing After Loss, in 1999, Taylor has excelled in children’s literature, educational projects, and creative design. His vibrant illustrations bring Plaid Bear TM to life, enhancing the story’s warmth and whimsy.
Patti Saxon’s journey is a testament to lifelong creativity and the joy of storytelling. Her unwavering passion inspires the Sun Lakes community and beyond, reminding us all that it’s never too late to pursue our dreams.
