As the holiday season approaches, I’m reminded each year that the true magic of this time is not in the decorations, music, or festive meals—it’s in the friendships that blossom and strengthen when people come together. Here at Robson Reserve at Sun Lakes, our shared celebrations are more than just events on a calendar; they are moments that connect hearts, bridge generations, and remind us that no one is ever truly alone.
For many of our residents, the holidays once meant bustling kitchens, full houses, and family traditions passed down through generations. Moving into a senior living community can sometimes bring uncertainty about how those traditions will continue. Yet time and again, I see something beautiful happen—new traditions form, and new friendships grow in their place.
During our annual tree-decorating parties, for example, residents gather to hang ornaments. Conversations blossom regarding family holiday traditions from years ago. As those stories are shared, connections spark. “You used to vacation in Oregon? So did we!” Before long, what began as a simple activity becomes an afternoon of laughter, memory, and mutual understanding.
Our Hanukkah and Christmas celebrations, our Kwanzaa gatherings, our New Year’s toast—all of these shared moments bring out the same spirit of togetherness. Residents who may not have known one another just months ago find themselves sitting side by side, holding hands as they sing a familiar song or share a meal. It’s these moments that transform neighbors into friends and friends into family.
Friendship is one of the best gifts we can give or receive. It doesn’t come wrapped in a box or tied with a ribbon—it’s found in a shared laugh, a comforting word, or the simple act of showing up for one another. The holidays, with all their warmth and wonder, simply help us see it more clearly.
As we enter this festive season, I invite everyone—residents, families, and staff alike—to take time to connect. Share a story. Sit with someone new. Join a group activity, even if just for a few minutes. You might be surprised by how much joy you find in the company of others.
From all of us at Robson Reserve at Sun Lakes, may your holidays be filled with warmth, laughter, and the lasting gift of friendship.
