Our Fall Season is now well underway and will continue through Dec. 19. Opening day on Oct. 28 was enhanced by a hot dog cookout. Thanks to Vern and Janet Rodgers for organizing that event. As the legendary actor Humphrey Bogart said, “A hot dog at a ball game beats a steak at the Ritz!” At press time, we had just completed the first two weeks of the season. Our Lady Sluggers have started practicing for their upcoming season, which starts in early January. They play against teams from throughout the Southeast Valley in the Valley of the Sun League. See the Ladies page on our website for additional information.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of former SLSSA member Mike Core. Mike was a longtime player in our league. He also served several terms on our board of directors and was the secretary for many years. In addition, he was our official photographer, capturing many memories for us. See the Photos and Other Information page on our website for many examples of his work. We’re republishing his 2012 “Player Profile” article in this edition of the Splash in his memory. Our prayers for comfort are with Mike’s wife Sue and his family and many friends. A memorial service was held on Nov. 16 at Valley of the Sun Mortuary. Many of Mike’s former teammates were there for his final at bat. May he rest in peace.
