Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation in February, 2026! It began that morning when I raced outside to take leftover garbage to the approaching truck. Racing down the front walk, my slippers caught on the uneven, rough brick driveway pavers. Leaving my slippers behind, I sailed parallel to the earth for about six feet, landing on my hip and smashing my entire right side! I lay motionless, unable to move, for what felt like eons of time, watching the hungry driveway ants start to excitedly approach. I tried to holler for help, waving at passing cars and golf carts. One lady on a golf cart smiled and waved back, not noticing the grotesque position of my body as it stretched unnaturally across the driveway.
Just as the forecasted drizzles were starting to fall, my husband Steve finally walked outside and found me. However, when my hero attempted to lift my dead weight up from behind, placing his arms beneath me, he severed all of the ligaments in his rotator cuff and damaged his sciatic nerve!
Our adventures didn’t end there! Friday the 13th continued to wreak havoc! As he drove down our street following the ambulance carrying me to the hospital, his car got a flat tire! Apparently, the head of my femur was fractured off, requiring three pins to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. My husband wasn’t as lucky. At our age, surgery isn’t recommended for torn rotator cuffs.
But Friday the 13th wasn’t finished! Medication for long COVID canceled out strong pain killers given following my surgery, leaving me without the benefits of either! There was no choice left but to LAFF!
As writers and a director of LAFF’s musical comedy, The Key to a Good Night’s Sleep, my husband and I hoped we’d be able to keep our March performance commitments. However, our amazing and appreciated cast members thought otherwise! With many in the cast also experiencing medical misfortunes, including the passing of a spouse, the entire cast sadly but wisely voted to postpone the play until early 2027!
LAFF regrets having to postpone our show, which we were so excitedly working on to bring to our Sun Lakes audiences, but we deeply appreciate your understanding and promise to make our performances worth your wait!
Please look for our return, and LAFF again with us in January or February, 2027!
LAFF, an interfaith group using creative and performing arts to share LAFFter and camaraderie while promoting multicultural understanding, welcomes all who are interested to join our fun! We figure if we are LAFFing and having a great time, our audiences will do the same!
Eventually, we will heal, the show will go on, and we’ll all find “The Key to a Good Night’s Sleep”!
