Kristi Fincher of Purple Daisy Quilting in Tempe
Mary La Tourelle
April’s speaker was Kristi Fincher of Purple Daisy Quilting in Tempe. She comes from a long line of quilters and learned at the knee of her mother, Sharon Schamber, a master quilter and teacher who has won three best in show awards at the Houston Quilt Show. Kristi showed several small and large quilts and tops and brought some patterns for purchase. The quilting was absolutely exquisite! She shared her top 10 keys for quilting, two of which are: 1) use machine embroidery needles because they have a ballpoint tip and make smaller holes in the fabric than, e.g., sharper universal needles which cut the fabric; 2) do basting with glue when possible. She uses Elmer’s, which washes out.
Faith Bragg introduced our candidate for next president, Teri Jimerson. Teri was voted in and will start her term in September. Other board members will serve their terms for another year.
President, Karen Pitts, announced that she and Nussy Merchant will be starting an AccuQuilt friendship group in September. There are several of our members who have AccuQuilt die-cutting systems but haven’t learned to use them, so this will be a great opportunity to gain experience and also share dies. On April 16, there will be a class in using panels so readers can expect to see panel quilts in future show and tells. During this meeting’s show and tell several members displayed their quilts, including Karen who won a red ribbon at the recent Arizona Quilter’s Guild show in Glendale.
Juliann Nelson of Casa Grande won the drawing for the spring opportunity quilt. The colorful quilt was a joint effort from members Kathy Hawthorne, Meredith Hoistad, and Karen Pitts. Great work, ladies!
Visitors are welcome to attend any of our meetings, held the first Wednesday of the month, September through May, at 1 p.m. in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club (25601 S Sun Lakes Blvd). For more information, please visit our website at agavequiltersguild.com.
