Candidates, Community, and Conversation at Democratic Club’s May Meeting

Along with our monthly meetings, we also have a monthly luncheon, like this one at Stone and Barrel. It’s a great place to hear speakers and learn the issues, along with having a great lunch.

The Sun Lakes Democratic Club (SLDC) will host an evening of civic engagement on Monday, May 11, at the Sun Lakes Country Club, Navajo Room, 25601 E. Sun Lakes Blvd N, in Sun Lakes. The event begins with a social at 6:30 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.

The May meeting will feature a diverse lineup of candidates seeking office in key local and statewide races, offering attendees an opportunity to hear directly from those shaping the 2026 election cycle.

Brian Matlock, candidate for Arizona State mine inspector, will open the program. A mechanical engineer, veteran, and inventor with six patents—some related to mining—Matlock will discuss the role of the mine inspector and the challenges facing the industry in Arizona.

Chandler mayoral candidate Matt Orlando will also speak. A current city council member, Orlando brings extensive experience from Chandler’s period of rapid growth and will address emerging issues such as data center expansion and long-term planning as the city approaches buildout.

Incumbent Chandler city council member Jane Poston, elected in 2022, will discuss her re-election campaign. As a local business owner, Poston offers insight into the needs of Chandler’s business community and managing growth in a maturing city.

Cicely Rocha-Miller, a Chandler business owner and longtime resident, is running for an open seat on the city council and will share her vision for the city’s future. Chandler city council races will be decided in the July 21 primary election, with a November runoff if needed.

The program will also feature legislative district 13 candidates, including Kristie O’Brien for state senate and house candidates Dr. Racquel “Rockee” Armstrong and Jacob Weinberg. They will outline their priorities and perspectives on key state issues.

Additional candidates from across the 2026 election cycle are expected to attend, providing community members with the opportunity to meet and engage with those seeking public office.

The Sun Lakes Democratic Club represents more than 2,500 registered Democrats in the Sun Lakes area and is committed to promoting an Arizona that works for everyone. As part of its community outreach, SLDC encourages donations to Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank. Contributions may be made at the meeting or online and qualify for a dollar-for-dollar Arizona tax credit. The SLDC also invites people to join other club members at 10 a.m. for our first Friday coffee the first Friday of every month, at Denny’s at 4977 South Arizona Ave. in Chandler.
