Immigration

Roy Parfitt

When democracy and freedom were put into place,

It created endless opportunity for the whole human race;

And to take advantage of this wondrous event,

Came the new worlds new power; the new Immigrant.

Thank God for this woman, thank God for this man,

Thank God they chose America, when they chose a new land;

When fleeing oppression or religious torment,

Thank God we had a system, for this brave Immigrant.

From every continent and country on the face of the earth,

Our forefathers decided, to leave the place of their birth;

And when trying to decide, on a new country or nation,

America was the choice, for their Immigration.

Namecalling, bloodshed and ignorance, in the name of salvation,

Didn’t outweigh the call of freedom, and their immigration.

Some had dreams go from high, to the reality of low,

Think 1850’s slums, covered with soot on old snow;

From doorway to garbage can, cold and hungry they went,

Looking for the Promised Land.. our new Immigrant

Along with traditions and cultures, and bright eyed intentions,

Came oil for the wheels of industry, with their new inventions;

Freedom, plus opportunity, equaled creativity and innovation,

Blessing our country, with our forefather’s immigration.

If we traded places, and the tables were turned,

Would we find already being here, is an advantage unearned?

Common sense and logic, coupled with our education,

Should let us take pride in all peoples immigration.

With war talk, national tensions and all this unease,

Shouldn’t we try even harder to try and appease?

Let us throw out our arms and tear down the fence,

For at the end of the day, we are all Immigrants.
