It’s that time of year, Hydrate, Hydrate Hydrate. If you are prone to suffering from the high temps please think of hydrating the evening before you play golf. Remember from June through the end of October, no chits are paid for golf. It is a social game and you can decide to be creative. Play a scramble or best ball or even tee up from the 150 yard marker. Anything to make the game quicker but still have fun.

Our Spring brought some of the hottest temperatures on record and many of our gals were taken by surprise with the heat. Here is some information for you to keep in mind for the next few months.

There is a difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion is moderate and treatable but easily an avoided condition caused by high temps. If you start to sweat heavily and get dizzy, get into the shade and sip a cool liquid. Wet a towel or splash some water on yourself or your partner. Rest a while in the shade then return home do not continue the game. It is not worth it.

Signs of heat exhaustion are:

Tiredness, dizziness, headache, feeling sick or crampy and excessive sweating. Your skin may become pale or clammy. Please, do not think this will pass! You must stop, rest and then go home. If you feel any of these signs tell your partner.

Heat Stroke is life threatening. If your partner starts to become disoriented and stops sweating—get into the shade and dial 911. Heat stroke can cause mental confusion, slurred speech and dry skin. You have lost your ability to sweat. Your pulse will be rapid and a severe headache will be next.

Please take care of yourselves and keep an eye on your partner. Always carry an extra bottle of water, It’s a good idea to freeze one overnight for the game the next day.

Stay safe out there and remember to sip your water, or other liquid every hole. Do not wait to feel thirsty, by then it is too late.

And what may feel very hot to you may not be over 100—it can be in the 90s but it can still cause you problems so ask for help if you feel any of the symptoms. Safe travels to those of you who head to cooler climates or just back to your summer home.
