Ironwood Men’s Golf—“Bring on the Heat”!

Richard Staszewski

The Arizona heat is upon us as IMGA continues its Tuesday event schedule until October when the annual overseed takes place. Early morning shotguns (7:30 a.m.) see the vast majority of players participating. The noon shotgun always has a handful of hardcore players!

June will see the restoration of all of Ironwood’s bunkers. You will see vehicles and crew methodically doing work. Expect to see drop areas accordingly.

1: Heat exhaustion is the concern

Look for the symptoms:

* Heavy sweating

* Cold or clammy skin

* Headache

* Nausea

* Muscle cramps

* Fast or weak pulse

* Confusion or irritability (outside of the normal behaviors!)

2: Hydration is the key

* Pre-hydrate by starting the night before you play

* One cup (eight ounces) is recommended per hour

* Replenish your electrolytes

* Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine

* Eat snacks to replace salt loss and potassium (bananas are excellent)

3: Play fast and ready golf!

* You can play ready golf and not be rushed

* Be smart and hit when ready without causing any chance of injuring your partners

* Think of the heat out there! 30 minutes less exposure is huge.
