Sun Lakes Arts and Crafts Association Member Spotlight

Judy Sadkin surrounded by recent creations

Judy Sadkin

When Judy Sadkin (that’s me!) from Illinois joined the club as a last-minute new member in 2022 to sell her wreaths, little did she know that she would be asked to take over as Show Chairperson a little under a year later. The current chairperson was moving and they needed someone to step into the role. Not that she was ready for this new adventure but what the heck! With a little information and a lot of support phone calls from other board members, she assumed the role of chairperson and has lived through the chaos ever since.

After seeing many Facebook posts of wreaths, the need to create was born. “It was my first time creating any items to sell. Back then, I used lower quality materials until I was sure of how well I could create something with them before moving on to the better-quality supplies. I went from using Dollar Tree products to high-end ribbons, mesh, and flowers and loving the results in the finished projects. Many family members received the early attempts for their doors, walls, and offices—just to get them out of the house as they were multiplying quickly. Now, I love finding each of them homes and seeing them displayed on front doors in the community. My biggest joy is a repeat customer who tells me exactly which wreaths they have purchased in the past and it brings a huge smile to my face that they want more!

While the months leading up to the craft shows get a little busy, creation of wreaths continues throughout the year. The latest finished projects include football themed wreaths, fall Snoopy swags, and starting this month, card player ideas. Holiday wreaths are a year-round project as new themes are released from suppliers.

Being in the Arts and Crafts Association has created so many new friendships. This is a great group of people who want to get together to sell their items. They respect each other and the creative process.

Advice to new crafters: “Do not expect to make a lot of money on your creations. Despite the exaggerated posts on social media, you may not have the audience for high dollar sales. You have to roll with the economy and adjust your prices accordingly. Oh yes … and get a credit card system for those people who did not plan on making a purchase. Those can be very happy moments! “

Judy and other members of the Sun Lakes Arts and Crafts Association will be showcasing their products at craft shows in the Oakwood Ballroom and at the annual Holiday Show on Nov. 28 and the Spring Show in February. Vendor sign-up begins on Monday, Oct. 12 in the Cottonwood Computer Learning Center at 10 a.m. during the member meeting. New members may apply at that meeting. Visit slaca.net for more information.
