AAUW announces scholarship winner

Barbara Stewart

The winner of the 2015 American Association of University Women (AAUW) Scholarship is Emely Hernandez. She is an exemplary student at Chandler High School who has taken course work that has prepared her well for university studies. In addition, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the Chandler High School newspaper, an active member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, and she participates in Link Crew (assisting freshmen students to assimilate into high school). She also has an impressive volunteer resume, having accumulated over 50 hours tutoring elementary students. In addition, she works from 15-20 hours per week.

Hernandez plans to continue her studies at either ASU or Midwestern College of Optometry. Her ultimate goal is a medical degree in optometry from John Hopkins University. With only one parent working, she plans to live at home while attending college, at least for now. We hope the AAUW $1500 Scholarship will help to make her freshman year just a little bit more comfortable. Hernandez has been invited to attend our Local Scholarship/International Dinner in February 2016 where we can all meet her and hear about her first semester in college.

AAUW’s successful year of fund-raising culminated with the awarding of the Charlotte Hanson Memorial Scholarship to a deserving student from local high schools. Ellen Peck represented our Branch to present the award to Emely Hernandez at Chandler High School’s Senior Scholarship Night on May 14, 2015.
