Eight Sun Lakes Aero Club (SLAC) members and guests completed a successful field trip to view the Titan Missile Museum south of Tucson January 28. The visitors descended into the underground launch control center where a crew of two once stood capable of launching the Titan II missile from the underground silo in just 58 seconds and delivering a nine-megaton nuclear warhead more than 6,300 miles in about 30 minutes. This and 53 other Titan missile sites were credited with helping keep the peace during the Cold War between the US and the former Soviet Union during 1963-87. SLAC sponsors field trips and fly-in breakfasts each month from November through April.
