Our March 5 meeting was a remarkably busy one with a speaker, an anniversary celebration, a business meeting, an abundance of Show and Tell, and plenty of camaraderie. First up was our speaker Madonna Baker, owner of Mad B’s Quilt and Sew in Mesa (an authorized BERNINA dealer). The shop offers longarm quilting, sales and service, more than 2,000 bolts of fabric, notions, patterns, embroidery designs, sewing lessons, and custom kit concierge service. Madonna is entertaining, as well as knowledgeable and informative, and covered everything you will ever need to know about batting. Everyone in attendance learned something new! (In the March Splash, it was inadvertently reported that our March speaker would be Gina Perkes, owner of The Copper Needle in Payson. Gina is scheduled to be our April program speaker and will cover the subject of machine quilting designs.)

The guild marked its 30th year with delicious cupcakes, coffee, and tea. Historical scrapbooks holding photos and newsletters from the first 10 years of the guild were on display for members to peruse and take home to keep. Each member received a beautiful, hardcover, lined notebook and pen, both inscribed with “Agave Quilt Guild 30th Anniversary.” Members were able to pick from an array of colors. Sue Jordan was acknowledged as a longtime member, having signed up shortly after the guild began in April of 1995. Sue never misses a meeting and remains active to this day, having held several positions within the guild over the years. For the past few years, Sue has been our Sunshine Chair, sending greeting cards to members who need cheering up. Thank you, Sue, for your continued support and dedication to the guild!

During the month, our Community Service Committee, always hard at work, delivered another batch of quilts to Valleywise Hospital for use in the Child Life Department. Each quilt is made with love by our guild members.

We had seven guests in attendance at the March meeting, three of whom joined as new members, bringing our current total to 93 members. Agave Quilters Guild is open to all persons interested in quilting, whether you have never quilted before, are just beginning, or are an experienced quilter. You are welcome to attend up to two meetings before deciding to join.

The Agave Quilters Guild meets in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 S. Sun Lakes Blvd., from September through May, always on the first Wednesday of the month. For more information, please visit our website at agavequiltersguild.com.
