Jonathan Miguel Klinker, grandson of Dr. John and Barbara Miguel of Sun Lakes, recently received a scholarship from the Prince Henry the Navigator Society of Fall River, Massachusetts. Robert Sherman, former U.S. Ambassador to Portugal, and Pedro Carneiro, Consul of Portugal to the United States, presented the scholarship on behalf of the society at its annual dinner. The Prince Henry the Navigator Society seeks to support students of Portuguese ancestry in their pursuit of higher education and awards its scholarships on the basis of academic excellence, commitment to community service and understanding of Portuguese culture as expressed in an application essay.

An outstanding student with an unparalleled commitment to community service, Jonathan was also selected as a “Best and Brightest” graduate by the Fall River Herald News and was selected as Newport County’s Outstanding Youth Volunteer. He was also awarded scholarships for his leadership and service from the Fall River Rotary Club, the Lions Club, the Grand Lodge of Pythias, Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, Inc. and Comcast. An Eagle Scout, he was also named RI Scout of the Year by the VFW and submitted as a finalist in their national scholarship competition.

A top ten graduate of Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River, Jonathan will attend the College of the Holy Cross in the fall and plans to pursue a career in public service.
