We held our usual six derbies. They were spread over four schools. There were youngsters from Learning Foundation Back to Basics School, Mesa; Willis Jr. High ESL Classes, Chandler, three groups from San Marcos Elementary, Chandler, and Concordia, Mesa. There were a total of 149 fisher persons. As schools’ budgets are tight the club assisted with $850 for transportation costs. The club also furnishes the equipment and bait and as you saw last month the fish. We had a good turnout of members and volunteers to assist the kids. A good ratio for fishing assistants is about three children to one adult. We had some assistants from the Firemen on at least one occasion. What a great experience for a youngster to get to fish with a real fireman.
The next derbies will be starting in March with one school booked already. All you grandparents don’t forget the Grandparent Derby will be as always on the Saturday before Easter. Put it on your calendar now.
We exist to offer grade school youngsters a chance to have a day doing something they many have never done. They get to meet a new adult that has taken time to help them have a new and fun experience. Please join us. We would like/need you join the club. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month in the Mirror Room SLCC at 7:00 p.m. The next two meetings will be January 2 and February 6. See you there – ladies welcome.
The Anglers sponsor and sell items at the Flea Market held on the third Saturday of the month at the SLCC parking lot. You will find great bargains. The hours are 7:00-11:00 a.m. Donations to the Anglers are sold and the proceeds go to support the fishing outings we sponsor. We need smallish items to sell. For donations call Don Herring at 480-802-9320 for drop-off or pick up. For a booth of your own at the Flea Market contact the SLCC office at the Clubhouse. Only a $5.00 fee gets you a spot.
