Rev. Vernon Meyer, PhD
Tuesday, November 29
6:00-7:00 p.m. Robson Library – Lecky Room
9330 E. Riggs Rd., Sun Lakes, AZ 85248
The Age of the Enlightenment placed science and reason as the ultimate definer truth in the human community. Religion and spirituality were judged to be mere superstition, so by the 19th century many were proclaiming God was dead. In the United States today almost 29 percent of people no longer identify with organized religion and while the reasons vary, most suggest that religion is behind many of the conflicts in the world today.
Pastor Vernon Meyer, PhD, pastor of Sun Lakes United Church of Christ, will discuss the challenges religion and spirituality face in the postmodern world where people are suspicious of religion and equally unsure of the place of spirituality in their lives. Pastor Vernon will reply upon the work of Karen Armstrong in her two important books, The History of God: the 4,000 Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and The Battle of God.
There will be time for questions and refreshments following the presentation. For more information contact Pastor Vernon at Sun Lakes United Church of Christ at 480-895-6317 or Fred Cerutti at 480-415-8589.
