Ring the bells! Begin the cheers! Bring on the cake! Start the celebration! Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club at Oakwood is 20 years old. The club has been meeting every week since January 6, 1996.

Earlier in the year a group of four dedicated bridge players, Bob Binder, Nancy Espy Martin, Jane Cordon and Evelyn Hamilton, now deceased, met with the existing club director to ask for some rule changes the group felt needed to be addressed. They wanted 1) a non-playing director, 2) stratified games, 3) individual results. Their request was denied.

The only solution was a new club. Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club at Oakwood was born. Bob Binder used his skills to develop the by-laws and get the group established as a non-profit organization. Nancy Espy Martin began teaching novice classes for beginning bridge players. She continued to teach those very successful classes through 2008.

Nancy remembers the first night the bridge club opened using the Bradford Room at Oakwood Country Club, “We had people all over the place. We put tables in the hall and in the library. Joy Balzer was the first game director. It was chaotic and fun!” There were about 12 tables that night. The club now averages between 30 and 40 tables four days a week.

When asked how she felt about the bridge club, Nancy responded with her usual enthusiasm, “This club is my second family!” Bob Binder was a little more sedate in his response. He spoke carefully and sincerely as is his way, “It is a pleasure and an honor to see this club grow and mature.”

The cake was eaten, the founders were saluted, and the game went on. Thank you Nancy, Bob, Jane, and Evelyn for this great organization and your view of the future.

The Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club games are now held at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 23914 S Alma School Road.

Open games are held on Monday at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. There also is a Novice game Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to game time! Novice games on Saturday mornings resumed in November.

If you are in need of a partner for any Open Games please contact the Players’ Pairs Assistants, Eileen Utter at [email protected] or phone 802-8300 or Barbara Lubsen at 699-9649. Please try the e-mail first if you have access to a computer. Note: Please remember to clean up your area when you are done with the game i.e. cups, napkins, score cards, etc. It is not the Director’s responsibility to do this. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Top games for the month were: Steve Mansfield and Janet Daling with a 72 percent game; Sadu Marrott and Roger Edwards with a 71.31 percent game; and Patrica Sohler and Robert Brower with a 70.90 percent game. Congratulations to these pairs for a great game.

Novice Bridge

The 0-99er Novice Group meets Thursday mornings with a review lesson at 8:15 a.m., partners suggested but not required – newcomers are welcome! The 0-199er Intermediate Group plays every Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. and on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and otherwise they play in the Open Games. All players are welcome to attend all Open Games. Everyone must check in no later than 15-minutes before the start of any game in order for Directors to seat you properly.
