We would like to remind all players to clean up the playing area before leaving the game site. This means bottles, wrappers, cups, Kleenex, paper towels, etc. Also make sure that all the playing material (bidding boxes, pencils, table cards and boards) are returned to the proper storage areas. It is not the director’s responsibility to clean up after us.

Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Novice

Karin Hansen

March was a great month for some of the novice members of the duplicate bridge club with several high scores reported. On Thursday, March 4, Bernie Emery and Rich Schager obtained a 69.39% game in the Sun Lakes morning 99er game. On Tuesday, March 19, during the 499er game, Jim Libby and Craig Holstead scored an amazing 74.29% game. Congratulations to these players for their great games! Also during March 21-24, the unit sponsored a tournament held at the In Tempo Bridge Club in Scottsdale, AZ. Many novice and intermediate players from Sun Lakes participated and some great scores were achieved. On Thursday, March 21, Dianne Zimmerman and Sandy Peterson finished first in C during a 199er game. Also on Thursday, Jane Slezak participated on a team with her family members and finished high in a Swiss game. And Jacque Tooley and a friend finished first in the 199er game in the afternoon. On Friday, March 22, Dennis and Carol Hannon had a first-place finish with at 68% game, and Phyllis Johnson and Cheryl Ramier had a great finish in the afternoon. During the Sunday Swiss, Jane Slezak and her family once again won for level three. Also, the team of Bonnie Butler, Cheryl Verlander, Karin Hansen and Harvey Lowe won in the level four Swiss game. Chris Giza, Bill Harrison, Vicky Aubrey and Rita Myrann finished second in bracket five. Congratulations to these and all the players who participated in the tournament.

Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge is open to everyone. A special game for Beginning and Novice players is held on Thursday mornings at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 23914 S. Alma School Road. Start time is 8:15 a.m. with a short lesson followed by two hours of playing duplicate bridge with assistance from the instructors and assistants. During June, instead of a lesson before the game, there will be a discussion of the hands following the game. This is a great way to improve your game. The game is structured “duplicate style” but is casual, relaxed and fun. If you have a partner, that is fine; if not, one will be provided for you. Top-finishing ACBL members with less than 100 masterpoints can earn masterpoints for participating in the Thursday morning game. Cost for the game is $6 for members of the Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club and $7 for non-members. Questions about the Thursday game can be directed to Anne Newman, [email protected].

Experienced players with more than 100 masterpoints are invited to bring a new beginning partner to the game to introduce them to the wonderful world of bridge. The experienced player will pay and play with the beginner and then be given a voucher for a free play at some future game at the Sun Lakes Club. Games for experienced Novice and Intermediate players who are non-life masters with less than 500 points are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 23914 S. Alma School Road. Please arrive by 1:00 p.m. in order to pay entry fees and be assigned to a table. Cost is $6 for members and $7 for non-members. Partners are required for this game. If you need help arranging a partner, contact [email protected]. This is a stratified duplicate game with ACBL rules and directors. Information about the bridge club is available on the Internet under unit351.com. Opening the “Clubs” tab will direct you to Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge and will open the webpage with more information. Questions about the novice program may be directed to Karin Hansen, board representative, at [email protected].
