Surprise! Surprise!

Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club surprised Director Roman Martin prior to the December 18 game by honoring him on his 80th birthday and for his sustained contributions to the Bridge Club. A group of nearly 100 bridge players assisted Kathy Markham’s delivery of many verses of an original parody of Santa Claus is Coming to Town by lustily singing the chorus “Roman is Directing the Game.”

Following the singing, President Jim Utter presented Roman with a framed original cartoon inspired by Roman and commissioned by the club for this special occasion. The cartoon was created by American Contract Bridge League’s (ACBL) official artist Bill Buttle. It was inscribed, “Artwork for the ACBL Bulletin Inspired by Roman Martin on the Occasion of his 80th Birthday, December 21, 2014. Presented to Roman with Sincere Appreciation by the Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club.”

Overcome with emotion, Roman spoke to the group briefly following the award. The group responded to his remarks with a standing ovation.

The Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club games are now held at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 23914 S Alma School Road.

Open games are held on Monday at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. There are no more Saturday afternoon games. There also is a Novice game Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. provided we have enough players. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to game time!

The 0-99er Novice Group meets Thursday mornings with a review lesson at 8:15 a.m., partners suggested but not required – newcomers are welcome! The 0-199er Intermediate Group meets Tuesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. when enough players attend, and otherwise they play in the Open Games. All players may attend Open Games.
