Celebrating Hugh Verlander!

Carol Ritter

Hugh Verlander has played cards since he was in the Air Force in the ‘50s. He did not learn to play bridge until much later, and he did not learn from taking lessons but from observing his coworkers play and reading bridge books. Gladly, his coworkers invited him to fill in one day at their bridge table. In 1972 a coworker invited Hugh to be his partner at a local Kent Washington bridge club. Fifty-four years later, after a hiatus from bridge for a number of years, Hugh earned his Life Master at Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club, a goal that had become number one on his bucket list.

Along his journey at Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club, his partners were Michelle Steiner, Mary Ryan, Cheryl Verlander, and Richard Lapkin.

Hugh says that he will continue to play bridge as long as his health and mobility permit.
