Just like all vehicle drivers must obey the traffic lights to drive effectively, tennis players must visually section off the court using the same three-color scheme to play better tennis.
Red Light: Back court behind or slightly in front of baseline area. Control aggressive hitting or being neutral where you are hitting. Medium to medium plus swing speed.
Yellow Light: Think of it like a yield sign. Being in No Man’s Land is where you’re too far up to do a comfortable groundstroke, and you’re too far back to perform put away volleys. This is where you move forward, slow down, and proceed with caution. Coach Kwong calls it “Gilligan’s Island.” Gilligan is always yelling for the Skipper, because he always seems to be in trouble and needs his help!
Green Light: This is inside the service box area where you are now much more intimidating and in great position to “poach” or perform put away volleys or an overhead smash.
Learning this color light scheme on the tennis court will help you and your partner play better and smarter tennis!
