Cottonwood Ladies Golf Association (CLGA) is celebrating its 45th anniversary. It was founded in 1980 by 21 charter members with the purpose to advance the interest of women’s golf and provide organized golfing opportunities for women of all proficiency levels, and in so doing, promote courtesy, good will, and sportsmanship among all the golfers.
Holding true to this purpose, CLGA has expanded on our collaboration with all golfers, not just Cottonwood women. In December, CLGA partnered with Cottonwood Men’s Golf Association (CMGA) in repairing divots and ball marks on the course. CLGA and CMGA help each other during tournaments wherever needed. Recently, the men served drinks during the Santa Scramble, and CLGA monitored holes for one of their tournaments.
Then there’s the CLGA/CMGA challenge on March 14 with a patio party to follow. Just for fun, our women are paired with the men in a friendly competition of match play. We also pair up with the Cottonwood Lady Niners for a fun afternoon challenge. On Jan. 20 we played the annual Cotton/Verde Tournament with the Palo Verde women.
There’s still time to join this organization, which now has 89 members. Longtime member Gloria Combs reflected, “I have enjoyed playing with the CLGA ladies for over 35 years. It has been lots of fun and the source of many, many wonderful friendships. This group has become like a family to me, supporting each other through life’s ups and downs.”
For the past 45 years, CLGA has grown to be so much more than a group of women out for a round of golf. We’re working to bring the community together and improve the experience for everyone.
