In my March message, I had the opportunity to thank you all for allowing me the privilege to serve on the Board of Directors. Since our new Board of Directors start their terms after this publication was required, I find that I have the chance to again express my thanks and the pleasure to provide you a list of this past year’s HOA accomplishments:

As we approach the Easter holiday, I want to wish all of our homeowners a Happy Easter.

Upcoming Events

Easter Golf Cart Parade and Festival

Our Annual Easter Golf Cart Parade and Festival will take place on Saturday, April 4. Plan on decorating your golf cart this year and win some prize money. There will be 2 categories: Best Easter Theme and Best Decorated. We’ll have our famous egg hunt for the children thanks to the Rotary, Lions and Lions Breakfast Clubs at 9:00 a.m. sharp. After the egg hunt this year, the Sun Lakes Community Theatre, under the direction of Roger Edmonds, will perform Horton Hears a Who. The play will take place on Brentwood in the middle of the street. Following will be our famous Golf Cart Parade. After the parade has passed by, we’ll go into the San Tan Ballroom for games and refreshments. To get in the Ballroom you must have your homeowner’s card! Bring your cameras and get pictures with Mr. (Chris Mank) or Mrs. (Joyce Recupido) Easter Bunny.

Ladies Coffee

Ladies Coffees are for all Sun Lakes women and guests. They’re held in the San Tan Ballroom starting at 10:30 a.m. Doors open at 10:00 a.m. For only $3 you’ll receive cookies, hot coffee or hot tea and iced tea. Each month will be a new and fun program with door prizes. At the April 1 coffee you’ll be entertained by our very own talented Sun Lakes Chordaires, New Image Fashions will be on hand with racks of their clothes and lots more.

Impersonators 2016 Show Oh Canada

On Wednesday, March 15 the Impersonators will take the stage in the San Tan Ballroom. The performers will be doing a tribute to Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Shania Twain and Paul Anka called Oh Canada. If we sell out the 7:00 p.m. show, we will open the sale for a 3:00 p.m. show. Tickets are still only $20 and will go fast. Tickets go on sale April 1.

Nashville Gold

From the earliest days of what was referred to as hillbilly music through the Grand Ole Opry, Singing Cowboys, Western Swing, Honky Tonk, the Nashville Sound, Outlaw Country and Urban Cowboy, right up to today’s New Country, no era of good ol’ American music is left behind. Show date is Wednesday, May 20 in the San Tan Ballroom. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. show. Tickets are $20.

The Magic of Barry Manilow and Bette Midler

Barry is best known for his catalogue of his hits that include Mandy, Ready to Take a Chance Again, Could It Be Magic, Copacabana, I Write the Songs, Can’t Smile Without You and more – the show date is Tuesday, June 23 in the San Tan Ballroom. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. show. Tickets are $20.

A Tribute to the Beach Boys Catch a Wave

What more can we say – it’s the Beach Boys! So just sit back and listen to your favorite songs. The show date is Wednesday, July 29 in the San Tan Ballroom. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. show. Tickets are $20.

Teen Idols

There is nothing that can stir old memories like revisiting the music of your teen years. How about Bobby Vee, Frankie Avalon, Paul Anka, Pat Boone, Ricky Nelson, Dion and Fabian? The show date is Wednesday, September 2 in the San Tan Ballroom. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. show. Tickets are $20.

Cory McCloskey’s Love Boat Variety Show

Cory McCloskey from FOX 10 News and TAD Management have teamed up to bring the ship to you! Cory presents an old school variety show featuring some of the best acts you can see on the best cruise ships in the world including a sensational, ship-styled live band. The show date is Wednesday, September 30 in the San Tan Ballroom. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a 7:00 p.m. show. Tickets are $20.

Free Skin Cancer Screening

Dr. Joseph Allgeier of Radiant Complexions Dermatology Clinic will be conducting a free skin cancer screening in Cottonwood’s Phoenix Room (A-9) from 8:00 a.m. –noon. All Sun Lakers are invited. No appointment needed. The doctor will see you on a first come basis.

Free Exercise Equipment Classes

Personal Trainer Deryk Garmanian and his assistant/homeowner Brenda Waara will be instructing, at no cost, a weight room and equipment orientation class in the Ladies Fitness Center for both men and women (at this time) on Wednesday, April 15. Please sign up at Homeowner Services.

Healthwaves

As always, Healthwaves will be in Cottonwood’s A-7 (Painting Room) on Monday, April 13 from 8:00 a.m.–noon for anyone needing blood tests.

Board meeting minutes (Unapproved) from February 25

Directors present: Kathy Skrei, Richard Hawkes Don Hicks, Bud Jenssen, Jerry Lofquist, Dick Norris and Nancy Pannebecker

Also present: General Manager Steve Nolan

Board President Kathy Skrei called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. It was stated the meeting is being recorded for accuracy of the minutes.

Bud Jenssen introduced and gave a short biography of the civilian and military life of Army veteran Stephen Schneck. Mr. Schneck then led the Pledge of Allegiance. He was thanked for his service to our country.

Dick Norris made a motion, seconded by Jerry Lofquist, to approve the January 28, 2015 Board Meeting Minutes. The motion carried unanimously.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Kathy Skrei reported that the Board Workshop held prior to this meeting was well attended. It was about the current progress of the Health and Wellness Task Force. She thanked Jerry Lofquist for his leadership on this task force. She reminded everyone about Sunday’s Crystal Awards and that tickets were still available through Linda Caton. She encouraged everyone to attend tomorrow night’s Meet the Candidate Night at 6:30 p.m. in the San Tan Ballroom. She announced the dates of the March Board Meetings: Agenda Planning on March 17 in the Phoenix Room, Board Meeting March 25 at 3:00 p.m. in the San Tan Ballroom, followed by the annual Board Meeting at 4:00 p.m.

TREASURER’S REPORT:

Nancy Pannebecker presented the January 31 Financial Summary. A detailed report will be available for viewing in Homeowner Services.

Richard Hawkes made a motion, seconded by Don Hicks, to approve the January 31 pre-audited financial report. The motion carried unanimously.

At this time, Steve Nolan introduced Dotti Breyen, Sharon Horton and Diane Lyon of the Sun Lakes Women’s Association who made a donation to CWPV for $3,800. The donation will be used to purchase new benches for the five lakes area in Cottonwood. The SLWA was thanked for their very generous donation.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Architectural Compliance Committee: The report was given of its meetings held February 5 and 19. They had 99 permit applications approved, and one pending. Its next meeting is March 5 in the Phoenix Room.

The committee has two recommendations for the Board: 1. Approve the changes to ACC Guideline No.5, Item B – Awnings, Sun Shades, Sun Screens and Shutters; 2. Approve the appointments of Janet Kusmider and David Marcus to the ACC. The committee has no recommendations for management.

Audit and Finance Committee: The report was given of its meeting held February 11. It was reported that the audit had no errors for the third year and Brian Shaw and Karen Lease were congratulated for their efforts. It was announced that the committee will be auditing the vote counting in March. The next meeting is March 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Saguaro Room.

The committee has no recommendations for the Board or for management.

At this time, Kathy Skrei thanked the Brian Shaw and the accounting staff for their efforts in this year’s successful audit.

Communications Committee: Stephen Schneck was thanked for his military service. The report was given of its meeting held February 2. The Ambassadors had eight tours and 73 completed for the year. He thanked the Board on behalf of the Ambassadors for providing the ability for them to host a very successful new homeowner cocktail party in January. The Library is now open. The next meeting is March 2 at 8:30 a.m. in the Ceramics Room.

The committee has no recommendations for the Board or for management.

Election Committee: The report was given of its meeting held February 4. It was reported that Meet the Candidates Night will be held this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the San Tan Ballroom. The next meeting is March 4 at 1:30 p.m. in the Ceramics Room.

The committee has no recommendations for the Board or for management.

Facilities and Grounds Committee: The report was given of its meeting held February 2. It was reported that the committee discussed sound system; Sisk Park walkway; and project updates. The next meeting will be a change date, time and location March 9at 8:00 a.m. in the Phoenix Room.

The committee has one recommendation for management regarding installation of lighting of the cart path east of the PV swimming pool by the bridge.

Food and Beverage Committee: The report was given of its meeting held February 5. It was reported that the committee discussed the new PV menu, Trivia alternating between PV and CW, reservation policy and the catering informational event that will be announced in The Flyer. The next meeting is March 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the Saguaro Room.

The committee has no recommendations for the Board or for management.

Golf Committee: The report was given of its meeting held February 8. The committee discussed the update on the practice bunker which opens March 2; the annuals and play cards doing well. The next meeting is March 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ceramics Room.

Recreation Committee: The report was given of its meeting held February 2. It was reported that the committee’s goals were sent to the Board of Directors. The committee discussed the Health and Wellness Center Task Force and rewording of Pickleball registration procedures. The next meeting is March 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Phoenix Room.

This committee has no recommendations for the Board and one recommendation for management to provide squeegees and rollers for the Pickleball courts. Complete minutes of this committee’s meetings are available for viewing at Homeowner Services.

Safety, Security and Access Committee: The report was given of its meeting held February 4. The Sun Lakes Community Safety Forum on Wednesday, February 11 was very successful. All who helped were thanked for their hard work on this event, especially Bill Miller and Phil Montgomery. The next meeting will have a change of location, the A-6 Dance Room on March 4 at 10:00 a.m.

Health and Wellness Center Task Force: The HWTF met on February 24. The task force reviewed five locations for a Health and Wellness Center. The Health and Wellness Center surveys were included in the election vote mailing which was mailed on February 23. The next meeting is March 10 at 9:00 a.m. in the Phoenix Room.

The committee has no recommendations for the Board.

PROJECT REPORTS:

Steve Nolan Reported on the following project(s):

PV chipping and practice area contract is currently awaiting legal review. Once completed construction will start.

MANAGEMENT REPORT:

Steve Nolan gave the Management Report. He thanked management and staff for all they accomplished this month. He reminded everyone that Linda Caton has booked a lot of great events, so be sure to get your tickets.

DIRECTORS COMMENTS:

Bud Jenssen thanked Stephen Schneck for his military service and his work on the 501C3; the Sun Lakes Women’s Association for their generous donation; Brian Shaw and the accounting staff for their success with the audit.

Dick Norris agreed with the prior statements of Bud Jenssen.

Richard Hawkes also agreed with the prior statements of Bud Jenssen and he thanked Stephen Schneck for his military service and service to our community.

Kathy Skrei asked Dick Norris to give a progress report on the sound system.

Dick Norris reported the vendor is working on getting info from his subcontractors to put the bids together, so we are waiting for the results.

Nancy Pannebecker thanked Stephen Schneck for his military service and the Sun Lakes Women’s Association for being so good to us with the many donations. She reminded everyone to be sure to attend the Crystal Awards Dinner on March 1 at Palo Verde. We have two honorees from CWPV – Don Hicks and Woody Neiman. There will also be a speaker from Neighbors Who Care. See Linda Caton for tickets.

Don Hicks thanked Stephen Schneck for his military service; Marsha Zandbergen and SS&AC for a great Safety Forum; and Brian Shaw for a successful audit three years in a row.

Jerry Lofquist thanked Stephen Schneck for his military service and Sun Lakes Women’s Association for their donations. He reminded everyone to be sure to complete the Health and Wellness survey.

CAPITAL RESERVE REPLACEMENT FUND REQUESTS:

None

Don Hicks made a motion, seconded by Jerry Lofquist, to approve replacement of the Palo Verde fairway mower, for the low bid of $58,133.19 from Simpson Norton. The motion carried unanimously.

Richard Hawkes made a motion, seconded by Dick Norris, to approve replacement of the Palo Verde Hobart 20 qt. mixer, for the low bid of $5,939.39 from National Restaurant Supply. There was discussion. The motion carried unanimously.

Bud Jenssen made a motion, seconded by Richard Hawkes, to approve replacement of the Cottonwood double oven for the low bid of $15,205.65 from National Restaurant Supply. The motion carried unanimously.

Dick Norris made a motion, seconded by Bud Jenssen, to approve replacement of the Cottonwood dishes for the low bid of 13,046.56 from Southwest Glassware. There was discussion. The motion carried unanimously.

Richard Hawkes made a motion, seconded by Dick Norris, to approve replacement of the Palo Verde dishes for the low bid of $24,437.26 from National Restaurant Supply. The motion carried unanimously.

Bud Jenssen made a motion, seconded by Jerry Lofquist, to approve BP. Chapter 8-13 Food and Beverage/Recreation ticket sales. The motion carried unanimously.

Dick Norris made a motion, seconded by Richard Hawkes, to approve revision to ACC Guideline No. 5, Item B – Awnings, Sun Shades, Sun Screens and Shutters. The motion carried unanimously.
