Two ladies leagues in Sun Lakes joined together on Jan. 26 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Arizona Golf Association (AGA).
Each year, the Cottonwood Ladies Golf Association and Palo Verde Ladies Golf Association join together to play their annual Cotton-Verde Tournament. Despite the chilly and gusty morning, there was a players’ field of 108 ladies. A scramble format was used, and play was on the front nine of the Cottonwood course and the back nine of the Palo Verde course.
Lunch followed in the San Tan Ballroom where the winners were announced. The first-place winners were Mary Nelson, Wanda Wiggins, Deb Mohac, and Ruby Meyer. Second place went to Tracy Rice, Helen Jeub, Nancy Hermanson, and Sandra LaBute. Lisa Mohoric won Closest to the Pin on Cottonwood’s hole 8, and Lori Snodgrass was Closest to the Pin on Palo Verde’s hole 12.
To everyone’s delight, one of the players, Carol Guild, was the only player who dressed to the theme, “A Step Back in Time.” Her outfit was similar to that worn by the women who golfed in the Sixth Annual Women’s Championship held in Globe, Ariz., in 1929, as pictured on page 21 of the latest Arizona Golf Insider magazine.
Fun was had by all, and we raised our collective glass of wine to toast AGA for “getting better with age.”
