Daughters of the American Revolution

The Gila Butte Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) started 2025 with a busy January packed with service opportunities.

Chapter members assisted the Desert Threads Chapter of the Arizona Quilters Society with their project for Successful Aging AZ by helping to assemble small, heart-shaped “fidget” pillows. These pillows will be given to families and caregivers attending the free Sun Lakes Dementia Conference on March 6 at Sun Lakes United Methodist Church. Any excess pillows will be distributed at other memory care workshops sponsored by Successful Aging AZ.

Gila Butte members partnered with the Jewish War Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars to host a pizza party at the Phoenix Veterans Home. The ladies served pizza and helped with clean-up as a token of appreciation to our veterans who served our country faithfully and selflessly.

Gila Butte also represented at the naturalization ceremony in downtown Chandler as part of the city’s annual multi-cultural festival on Jan. 18. Chapter members passed out flags at the event where roughly 100 people took the oath of citizenship. The festival, which began in 1995, featured ethnic food, a car show, and performances on two stages of music, traditional dance, and taekwondo demonstrations.

February begins with DAR members from various chapters, including Gila Butte, participating in the Parada del Sol parade in Scottsdale. Some wear colonial period costumes and ride a float, while others walk the route handing out flags to the crowd.

Anyone interested in joining DAR should contact Ruth at [email protected]. The chapter can provide assistance with lineage research to prospective members if needed.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, charitable organization, founded in 1890 and incorporated by an act of the United States Congress in 1896. Membership in the society is open to any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. The DAR functions as a volunteer service organization and is dedicated to patriotism, education, and historic preservation. While DAR supports a strong national defense, it is not a political organization, nor does it lobby. Its membership includes women from Republican, Democratic, and independent political parties; women from all races and ethnic backgrounds; and women from ages 18 to 100+. The society does not subscribe to any particular religion, nor does it discriminate against any members who are of various religious beliefs.
