November will be a busy, but fun, month for the Anglers Club. Six fishing derbies are scheduled for the “kids” in November. They will be held on November 3, 7, 14, 17 and 27 on Lake 6 of the Sun Lakes Country Club and start at 9:30 a.m. and last until 11:00 a.m. Volunteer help is always appreciated. If you would like to help, be at the lake by 9:15 a.m., and we will find a place for you. It will be a fun experience filled with good memories of happy, smiling young children’s faces.
Each derby is limited to 30 students in grades one through six who attend Title 1 Schools in the area. Many of the children will get to experience fishing for the first time. Not everybody catches a fish, but the kids are excited for those who do. They run over and gather around the lucky girl or boy to see and touch the big ugly catfish with his whiskers or a better-looking bass.
The school brings lunches for the children, and when fishing is over, they sit on the grass to eat and talk about their fishing experience.
The Anglers furnish all of the fishing gear and pay for school bus transportation fees, which will be substantial this month. Thanks to the following donors for making this all possible: Sun Lakes Woman’s Association, Sun Lakes Lions Foundations, Sun Lakes Disposal, Robson Communities, Sun Lakes United Methodists Church, Sun Lakes V.F.W. and the Johnson family. The anglers display a banner of these donors at all fishing derbies.
An easy, fun way for you to support us is to visit our Flea Market, as all funds from this event go to support the Anglers. The Flea Market is held in the Sun Lakes Community Center parking lot on the third Wednesday of each month and is open from 7:00-10:00 a.m. The Anglers Flea Market is noted for its fantastic deals! All items on sale have been donated, and many new items arrive each month. If you have items to donate, call Glenn Cincera at 480-268-3045 or Don Herring at 602-574-6800.
The Anglers Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Mirror Room. Come check us out!
