Desert Threads Honors Member Ken Kubert

Ken Kubert displaying a quilt he made featuring vintage military kerchiefs

November is a time to reflect on all we are grateful for and honoring our veterans. Many Desert Threads members are or have been in the greater military or first responder family, whether as a dependent spouse, child, extended family, or active duty. We have lived and know the cost of choosing to serve our country and are proud of it. Today, Desert Threads gives thanks by honoring one of our own members, Ken Kubert, a retired Air Force man and recent recipient of a Quilt of Valor. He grew up around quilters and started quilting himself about three years ago. Ken made a quilt from four vintage kerchiefs handed down to him, one for each of four branches of the military. This is just one of the many quilts Ken has made and shares with his family. He says it is very cathartic and encourages other vets to consider taking up this hobby, and he would enjoy working with interested vets.

October was a busy month for Desert Threads. While we always have very interesting programs in the general meeting, this one was all about fun, as we enjoyed a version of speed dating that allowed our members to get to know one another better. Making quilts for charitable donations is a priority of the chapter. This month two quilts were assembled at a community sew day. We also had a booth at all three of the community activities events held throughout Sun Lakes. The booth was visited by many nice folks, and we hope to see some at our meetings in the future. Finally, we were able to attend a great Fun Day event sponsored by our parent guild. So many beautiful quilts and fabrics to look at!

Desert Threads is one of 28 chapters of the Arizona Quilters Guild (AQG), which allows us a non-profit status and a much wider availability of classes, events, and inspiration than we would have on our own. If you share a joy of all things quilting (touching, ogling fabrics and threads, piecing and quilting, did I say talking about?), consider joining AQG and Desert Threads. All levels of quilters are welcome. We meet the second Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Phoenix Room located in the Cottonwood Computer Learning Center across from the pool. Contact [email protected] if you have questions. Also, visit AQG’s website, arizonaquiltersguild.org, for more information about the guild.
