Desert Threads Quilters Well Represented at Local Quilt Show

Jody Edwards, Desert Threads Quilt Chapter of AQG

Desert Threads Quilters had 10 quilters display their quilts at the Arizona Quilters Guild (AQG) Quilt Show in Mesa in January, with seven of them bringing home awards! The AQG Quilt Show is an annual show with quilts entered by AQG members from all over the state.

Showing quilts this year were Denise Farnworth (First Place ribbon), Amy Fitzgerald (Third Place ribbon), Janet Strafalace (Outstanding Workmanship ribbon), Jill Eskew (Second Place ribbon), Jody Edwards, Maryellen Swanson, Pam Matassarin (Third Place ribbon), Barbara Johnston (Second Place ribbon), Naomi Marin (First Place ribbon), and Blanca Sanchez.

“We are so proud of all of our quilters who entered quilts into the show this year,” said Jackie Fife, president of Desert Threads. “This is the largest number of quilts entered from our group to date.”

Naomi Marin, who won a First Place ribbon for her quilt, was a first-time entrant into the show. “I never would have entered my quilt if it hadn’t been for the support and education from our chapter,” said Naomi. “The chapter offered a free class on ‘how to enter a quilt to be judged,’ and I took it. They convinced me to give it a try, and I came home with a ribbon!”

Educating and supporting all members on their quilting journey is one of the top priorities for Desert Threads Quilters. By offering group sew days, great speakers at meetings, and classes to learn new techniques, Desert Threads strives to create a quilting community that promotes learning and offers a friendly, social group of friends who love to sew!

Save the date for our April meeting on Wednesday, April 9, where we will have another amazing presenter. Cindy Lohbeck, The Dyehard Queen, will present a trunk show of stunning, hand-dyed creations to tempt you into learning the art! Cindy’s colorful contributions to the quilting community include an extensive line of fabric dyeing kits and innovative techniques. She brings a deep knowledge of color, dye, and textiles, along with an array of unique tools, tips, and tricks to help quilters, textile artists, and crafters share in the empowering experience of dyeing their own fabric.

Desert Threads is a welcoming, inclusive group of quilters who love to learn, sew, and meet folks wherever they are on their quilting journey. Quilters and sewists of all skill levels from the Sun Lakes area and surrounding communities, including those who are not yet members, are encouraged to join us at our meetings. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Cottonwood Computer Learning Center. The social chat starts at 9 a.m., and the meeting officially starts at 9:30 a.m. If you would like more information about our group or information on our upcoming classes, please send an email to [email protected]. We can’t wait to meet you!
