Doreen Taylor, Head Librarian
Phyllis Carr
In talking with Doreen Taylor on the phone, I assumed she had simply decided to take an early retirement as head librarian of the Sun Lakes Library. But no. This 93-year-old former secretary is retiring after 16 years of overseeing purchasing, scheduling, sorting, cataloguing, and many more necessary tasks, making the Sun Lakes Library a gem in our community. Her commitment to this job is evident in the organization of the library, making it easy to find the book being sought. Additionally, due to the volume of books available, there is truly something for everyone.
Doreen mentioned inspirational and historical fiction as her two favorite genres. After starting The Bregdan Chronicles, which she felt should be titled The Cromwell Plantation Series, Doreen began requesting all the books in the series. She felt that obtaining this series was one of her greatest endeavors. You’ll hear more about this series in the April edition of the Splash. She said one of the greatest challenges she faced as head librarian was the renovation, as it resulted in the loss of half of the library’s shelving. Although Doreen has been busy with non-reading activities, when she does have time for a book, her favorite place to read is her bedroom chair—old, comfortable, and familiar. Her favorite authors are Kristin Hannah, Nancy Turner, and Rosamunde Pilcher, but the next book on her reading list is the next book in The Bregdan Chronicles, #22. Doreen gives credit to the Women’s Association for supplying the library with the necessary funds to purchase the best sellers.
Originally from Michigan, Doreen moved to Arizona in 1995. Her two sons also live nearby, although her grandchildren are in various places across the country. She misses them, of course. After the recent loss of her husband, Doreen is finding ways to stay busy. Proud of all she has accomplished with the Sun Lakes Library, she is ready to relinquish her role as head librarian and get back to that favorite chair and her favorite series.
Doreen’s work has definitely made the Sun Lakes Library outstanding. Thank you, Doreen!
