Golf Tournament

The East Valley Marines, Detachment 1296, staged their Inaugural Golf Tournament at Bear Creek Country Club with all net proceeds going to our Arizona Wounded Warriors. Working with Master Sergeant Salvador Marquez, USMC, who is the District Injured Support Coordinator for the Wounded Warrior Regiment, VISN 18 (AZ/NM), the detachment was able to make a large contribution to their Wounded Warrior fund.

The tournament was a sell-out with 32 foursomes engaged in a shotgun scramble; 11 of our wounded warriors and their caretakers were in attendance. Special thanks go to our sponsors, including Thorobred Chevrolet, T-Mobile, Metro Commercial Properties, Chop Restaurant, The Living Room Bar & Grill and Peoples Mortgage.

JROTC Scholarship

Detachment members traveled down to Casa Grande for the Marine Corps JROTC Awards Night at Vista Grande High School. They presented graduating cadet Alicia Hamilton with a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship is based on the recommendations of her JROTC instructors who evaluate grades, community involvement, and military bearing.

Patriotic Day

For the second year, a group from the East Valley Marines attended Patriotic Day at Akimel A-al Middle School. During the general assembly, the school honored the veterans of the five services. Following the assembly, the Marines met with the seventh graders, telling about some of their personal experiences and answering questions. The wrap-up of the session was an exciting, student-involved demonstration of a helicopter rescue in a battle situation.

In order to be able to continue to provide assistance like this and to help other Arizona Wounded Warriors, the East Valley Marine detachment welcomes all Marines and associates. They meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Sun Lakes Chapel. Visit their website at www.eastvalleymarines.org to learn more.
