The Greater Sun Lakes Community Foundation announces a new fundraiser, Supporting Our Firefighters, One Step at a Time, for our local firefighters and EMTs based in the two Sun Lakes firehouses, 231 and 232. In 2024 these two stations responded to 3,723 calls from Sun Lakes residents, so it is evident that many of us have had the need for their service. This event is an opportunity to show our appreciation for the professional and caring service they provide to our community.

Most people do not know that the firefighters and EMTs do not receive a stipend for food as part of their pay and benefits, so each shift pools their own money to purchase their shared food at local grocery stores. The money raised from this event will be donated to the Firefighters Food Fund, as the goal of this new initiative is to raise all the money needed to cover the costs of the Firefighters Food Fund for both firehouses for a full year.

Save the date: Sunday morning, Oct. 19, at Oakwood Country Club

Plan to join us for this special fundraising event where every step makes a difference. Our firefighters will be right there walking with us. You will be able to register for the distance you want to walk: two miles, one mile, one-half mile, or if you are not able to participate in the walk itself, you can register to “walk in spirit.” After the walk, a light brunch will be available. Firefighters will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets, and AFMA will have a fire engine and ambulance on display for your inspection.

Watch for more detailed information about how to participate during the next few months in the Splash and your local community newsletters, flyers, etc.

Please join the Foundation in supporting our firefighters as they dedicate their time to helping our community.
