Bea Loozer
Recently I sent a sympathy card to a Goalie who moved back to Chicago and then lost her mother. She thanked me with the claim, “You Golden Goalies are my posse.” I don’t think she meant we are enforcers. I think she was getting at the friendship that has developed around a common purpose. Anyway, I thought it was a sweet thing to say.
Yes, we do have a common purpose, losing weight. But we don’t just sit around waiting for excess weight to fall off. Here are a few steps our members are taking.
1. Members learn about health issues of all sorts. We question and ponder. 2. Members learn techniques for cutting down on calories and bad fats. Last week Jeannie mentioned that holding your fork or spoon with your non-dominant hand can slow down the amount of food we delicately shove into our pie hole (as I’ve heard it called). Sometimes gimmicks actually help. And tips are often very helpful. 3. Members make an effort to move more. We join exercise and aerobics groups. We work out in the pool. We walk more. We’re all different, so we do what our bodies need. 4. We weigh in each week. 5. We help motivate and support one another.
All of these are very important. Old and new members attest to that. We have several new members and we invite and encourage you to join us too. That’s something good about Sun Lakes. We help each other, and we serve as supporters and sometimes role models. Personally, I look around at women who are older than I, and I see how I want to be as I age — not just thinner but supportive and involved.
Join our group for support, encouragement, shared wisdom and some good laughs. Weigh-in is between 7:00-7:40 a.m. in the Mirror Room of Sun Lakes Country Club. The meeting starts after weigh-in next door in the Friendship Room. Contact Rita at 895-2559 for more information.
