Golden Goalies – Recipe project

Bea Loozer

Goalies won’t be starving anytime soon; we do tend to like food. Maybe that’s why, last year, we decided to assemble some of our favorite recipes in a recipe book. You might think that Goalies would be sharing recipes for weight-conscious dishes. Not so much. Delicious? I think so. Low calorie? Maybe half are.

Originally, members were just encouraged to submit a favorite recipe or two – no conditions about cost, calorie count or any other limitation. If you know us, it’s no surprise to find that most of those recipes were on the sweet side. After a nudge to expand the number of recipes low in sweetness, we ended up with a wider array of dishes — and a lower percentage of recipes on the sweet side.

This recipe book was a group effort. Almost all of our members submitted at least one recipe. Our leader Sharon took on the task of keying in recipes that weren’t submitted electronically. Then Debbie took over to add more recipes and organize all of them. She also emailed them to those who have email. Special thanks to Sharon and Debbie for all their work.

Here are a few of the recipe names to catch your eye or entice your palate: Zucchini Pie, Bucky’s Bean Salad, Creamy Chicken Stir Fry, Seafood Fettuccine, Avocado Brownies, Taco Junk, Peanut Butter Pie, Rigatoni with Summer Vegetables and White Chicken Chili.

We don’t expect every recipe to appeal to all of us. That crack might be a not-so-subtle dig at Dimple’s Turnip Puff. But who am I to question Dimple’s taste or that of any of my other Goalie friends? Anyway, all of us could find many appealing delights and some easy fixings among our recipe selections. By the way, another recipe from Dimple does appeal to me, and that’s her Eggnog Pound Cake. Now you’re cookin’, baby. Cheers! Seriously, our group came up with a batch of really good recipes.

Join us for good company, laughs and even some good food. You will also find support, motivation and shared wisdom. Weigh-in is Saturday from 7:00 to 7:40 a.m. in Room A-8, near the Cottonwood Library. The meeting starts after weigh-in. Contact Rita at 480-223-8340 for more information.
