Each week Goalies come to the Country Club Mirror Room to weigh in. Rita and Irene weigh us and track our progress. Sometimes we leave that room smiling — sometimes not so much. But we leave knowing we’re responsible (“shouldn’t have had that salty popcorn yesterday” or “it paid to cut that special dessert in half”). Even though each of us is in charge of her own fate, we’re all supported by the group. It’s a successful approach.
After weigh-in and a bit of business, we try to share some tips or learn from a speaker about a topic. A few months ago our guest speaker was Birdie Isaacson, of Birdie’s Basics. You might have seen her at a recent Art Walk, but she was not visiting Golden Goalies to promote her products. Her daughter Debbie, a Goalie herself, invited her to inform us about soap — how it is made and what it consists of. We learned that true soap results from an exothermic reaction between fat (animal or vegetable), water and lye. These are chemically transformed into soap and glycerin with no more lye. The glycerin is typically removed from commercial soap but remains in hand-crafted soap, where it draws moisture to your skin so acts as a natural moisturizer. It was also good to learn that Castile soap is the most gentle soap you can use, though it does not create much lather. We do learn a lot in this group, but it’s mainly a support group for those determined to get healthier through weight loss. All I know is, it works.
Join our group for support, encouragement, shared wisdom, and some good laughs. Weigh-in is between 7:00-7:40 a.m. in the Mirror Room of Sun Lakes Country Club. The meeting starts after weigh-in next door in the Friendship Room. Contact Rita at 895-2559 for more information.
