Happy New Year, Sun Lakes!

Jim Meagher

Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank (MCFB) and Reach Out Sun Lakes (ROSL) want you to know how much we appreciate your generosity and cooperation during 2025. You delivered a record-breaking year of food and cash donations to MCFB through ROSL. Specifically, it amounted to over 3,500 pounds of food and over $3,000. That was accomplished by you through the organizations you belong to (mentioned below) and as individuals, not counting the financial donations you have mailed directly or donated using the MCFB website. The Sun Lakes community should be very proud of their demonstrated commitment to help in the fight against food insecurity of poor families and individuals in the Chandler area. To clarify the process, ROSL (we are residents of Sun Lakes) acts like the Amazon delivery truck. We deliver to MCFB (our local food bank in Chandler) the donations that you (the community of Sun Lakes) donate in the ways described above. Together, we make music. You are the singers, the melody. We are the musicians harmonizing as you sing the melody. Working together, we make music for hungry people.

So, here we are in 2026 with the same stubborn, unrelenting problem: more than enough food but not in the homes of those who have the most pressing need for it. At the same time, they possess the fewest resources to secure it. It is incredible how little I put in my trunk last week at a local supermarket and added $225 to my credit card balance. I’m not telling you anything that you don’t know. Between rising costs and the cut-offs and delays in getting SNAP funds to the clients of MCFB, they are relying more than ever on all sources of food, with food banks at the top of their “shopping lists.” We need to work together and realize that all we have is a gift, and gifts are to be given. I’m sure you’ll agree with me that somehow when we give generously, we feel great, and somehow the gift is given back to us—not always in the same way, but always in a way that has equal or more value to us.

We are able to do what we do because of you, our organizational partners, and you, the members of the following organizations: residents of Sun Lakes Country Club, Democratic Club of Sun Lakes, Democratic Club of Chandler, Unity Church of Sun Lakes, and Bridge Club of Sun Lakes.

If you wish to work with us and belong to any of the above groups, please support their regular food/financial donation program for MCFB that is already in place. If you don’t belong to any of these organizations/communities, please contact me, Jim Meagher, at 630-346-1966. You can text or speak with me at that number and ask any questions or to arrange pick-up of food and/or financial donations. I will respond to voicemail or texts very promptly.
