The IronOaks Breakers Pool League had our final 8-ball tournament of the season just before many members left for the summer. Sixteen members signed up for the tournament, giving us eight teams of two people. The teams were selected by pairing a higher handicap with a lower handicap on each team. Each round was a race to three wins. It was a double-elimination tournament. This means that if you lose, you go down to the losers’ bracket and continue playing until you lose a second round, thus being eliminated from the tournament.

The final round of the tournament came down to the leaders of the winning bracket, John Fossen and Joe Palley, competing against Albert McCabe and Jim Boyes who were the leaders of the losing bracket. The leaders of the losing bracket were put in the position of having to beat the leaders of the winning bracket two games with no losses, because they had already lost one game to the winners’ bracket. After a tough match of two games, Albert McCabe and Jim Boyes (from the losers’ bracket) were victorious and won the tournament. Joe Palley and John Fossen were the second-place winners. Congratulations to both teams for a hard-fought battle to the finish. A good time was had by all.

This was the league’s first attempt at a tournament of this format, and it was a big success. Because the tournament took a total of seven hours to complete, next year we will divide the tournament into two days instead of a one-day marathon. In addition to four tournaments a year, we play 8-ball and 9-ball all-play three days a week all year.

If you are interested in joining the IronOaks Breakers Pool League, please stop by any Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday and talk to us.
