Rover’s Rest Stop began with the idea of pack living in order to socialize and train, with an outcome of happy, well-rounded Kids. It is frustrating for us to watch Kids struggle with anxiety, new environments, strange people, unexpected noises, and other pets. They should enjoy life, be involved in all family functions, and discover that the world is not scary but an amazing place to discover.
Socialization provides mental and physical stimulation crucial to development. Exposing them early between 8 and 12 weeks to a variety of situations and people helps to overcome anxiety. They should not be hiding behind your legs or pulling to get away feeling tense and fearful. The more they know, the less scary it is. Start early with physical touch by handling their feet, holding them, playing with their ears, and looking in their mouth. We make touching a fun game and then have no problem with nail trimming, ear cleaning, or teeth brushing. It is never too late to desensitize with a variety of experiences.
Those that are socialized have reduced stress and improved mental and physical health. Constant anxiety and stress give rise to conditions such as urinary tract issues, weakened immune system, Cushing’s disease, depression, GI issues, heart disease, diabetes, and skin issues. Less stress also eliminates bad behaviors such as indoor potty accidents and destructive chewing. They learn from every situation they encounter.
Rover’s Kids know the value of “matchmaking” and find that it helps them be in the best home for them and the family. The breed needs to be taken into consideration. Labs are easygoing and socialize easily. Jack Russell terriers and Aussies may not be as relaxed meeting and greeting others and need some extra guidance. Know your breed and your individual dog.
Socialization does not happen in one day. It takes time and patience. Be sure to know the body language warning you of fear so you can make each learning session a success. Reward the positive times. This is an ongoing process, and they will be healthier and happier.
Rover’s Kids know all about natural/holistic remedies and use flower essences, essential oils, homeopathic remedies, and music to ease anxiety when needed. Our Kids love the 4th of July. They play games, have music and sing, have great treats and new toys, and ignore the noise.
Additional natural and homeopathic support can be found through Dr. Judy Morgan’s book Naturally Healthy Dogs Unleashed! and www.drjudyu.com/podcasts/naturally-healthy-pets-podcast, or Dr. Karen Becker has information at drkarenbecker.com/pet-mental-health-behavior-and-enrichment.
Rover’s Rest Stop Kids welcome visitors at their second Saturday every month Meet & Greets. If you need more information, call 480-600-2828. Put down the phones, be together, take a “sniffari” walk, enjoy new adventures together, and share the love!
