This summer, Dr. Sydney Schaefer of Arizona State University brings her graduate students to share “Research in Aging” with members of New Adventures in Learning, a lifelong learning program. The presentation will be on July 13 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with a focus on recent studies on the aging brain. Past President Bobbie Reed explains that the graduate students “will have display posters describing their work, just like the posters presented at professional scientific meetings poster sessions. Members will be able to discuss with the students one-on-one their findings and how they study aging. We will have a very special opportunity to see what is happening at the forefront of research on aging.”
New Adventures presents 49 total classes, a record number for the summer semester, in the Sun Lakes Center of Chandler-Gilbert Community College at 25105 S. Alma School Road, Sun Lakes, AZ 85248. Along with special classes such as this one on research in aging, sessions use various other formats. Lecture classes are held in large classrooms and deal with a wide range of subjects from history to real estate, from physical to financial health, from how-to-do-something classes to those that expand the life of the mind. The roundtable discussion groups are smaller, more intimate and focus on conversation. Classes in the computer lab help people stay up to date in technology. Jan Bobbett, head of curriculum, says about the offerings, “The schedulers, recruiters, those who work with proposals, the editor, several proofreaders, many on the governing council and a whole team of presenters have worked to make this summer session a success. We all hope you will find classes to enjoy.”
Registration began for these classes on May 10, and some of them have reached their enrollment limits. To find out what is still available, check with the front desk at the Center. Summer hours go from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The Center is closed on Fridays until August 10.
