Meet the Sun Lakes Library Board Members

Phyllis L. Carr

May seems the perfect month to introduce the amazing board members of the Sun Lakes Library, sharing their visions and determination, and investing many hours of volunteering to make the Sun Lakes Library outstanding. If you haven’t visited yet, make a note to stop by soon.

Pat Weitzel, library board chairwoman: Pat, a member of the Sun Lakes Library for 18 years, chose to volunteer at the library as a way to meet people. She leads board meetings, advises members, and keeps the board bylaws current. She also does the purchasing and processing of best sellers, especially large print books. Her favorite book is anything by Louise Penny.

Bette Hargrave, secretary: Bette’s love of reading first drew her to the Sun Lakes Library, and she has been with the board since 2017. Her responsibilities include supporting the chairwoman, maintaining the volunteer roster and bestseller list at the desk. Bette helped reestablish the library after its refurbishing and takes great pride in seeing how well the library functions and serves the community. Her favorite genre is historical fiction.

Heather Carnes, treasurer and creative director: Heather has been with the library since the summer of 2023 and loves being able to volunteer indoors. Heather maintains the series books, cabinet, display case and bestseller list. Her favorite book is actually “The Book of Proverbs” from the Bible. Her latest fiction reads are The Last Thing He Told Me and Reminders of Him.

Cleone Sayers, new volunteer coordinator and trainer / sunshine lady: Cleone’s sister first told her about the library, and she has been a supporter ever since. For the last four years, Cleone has addressed volunteer requests, trained new volunteers, and sent greeting cards to board members. Her all-time favorite book is Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White.

Ev Rainwaters, social chairwoman and head of scheduling: Ev has been a member for over 10 years, drawn to the library because of her love of reading. She has been on the board for five years. Ev schedules volunteers, coordinates substitutes, organizes special meetings, and handles ordering and purchasing of supplies. Ev’s favorite book is The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. She is currently reading any book by Colleen Hoover.

Donna Petrillo, ambassador of buzz and donation book chair: Donna was initially drawn to the library for its variety and size. She has been on the board for six months and looks forward to helping to organize the library as it grows. Donna handles communications, sorts donations, and distributes excess books to Chandler Regional Hospital and the Women’s Association. Any historical fiction provides her reading pleasure.

Library Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
