Men Behind the Scenes

David Cain, aka “MacGyver”

Barb Jorgensen

Although our HOA does a great job with our tennis courts, many people (including Tennis Club members) don’t realize that we have a crew of volunteers who provide additional services to keep them up and running. Everything is in great shape—it really takes a village.

Dave Cain is one of those exceptional volunteers. He has been a Tennis Club member since the Spring of 2012 and has been doing maintenance of the courts and the ball machines since the Fall of 2016. Dave’s maintenance duties have included coordinating with the HOA on items needed for the courts, such as tennis nets, score markers, and anything necessary to keep the courts in their best condition; installing tennis nets and/or repairing them and maintaining their proper height; and ensuring that the scoring cards and ball holders are maintained properly by checking them regularly and painting the ball holders.

He responds to all players’ phone calls/emails that something isn’t working properly and promptly fixes that problem. This includes maintenance of the two ball machines and sweepers. What is tennis without bouncy tennis balls? Dave maintains the quality of the balls in the ball machines by regularly replacing the balls with balls he collects all year from club socials and tournaments and donated by players. He then donates substandard balls, and all tennis ball cans are recycled.

One of his other hats has been organizing the Thursday Men’s 3.0/3.5+ League since the Spring of 2013. This group is huge and super-fun. Because this group is so large, they are like their own mini-club, hosting their own parties, including BBQs.

On a personal note, Dave and Linda have been married for over 50 years and have three daughters and six grandsons. He is also known as “The Sign Guy” for displaying a letterboard in his backyard by the walking path on the north lake in Cottonwood. He changes the saying every day, expressing various thoughts like, “Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep.”
