Men’s October Niners results

Jim Wegman, Publicity

The Oakwood courses closed on October 10 for over seeding and the grounds crew began working on bunkers, sprinkler heads, punching, aerating and the many tasks needed to keep the courses healthy, looking good and playing fairly. We look forward to a November 3 reopening, but remember, it will be cart path only until November 24. There is no organized Niners League play on Thursday, November 24, Thanksgiving Day. Enjoy the day with family and friends.

Membership – Robbie Kerr was recruited by Norm Noble. Thanks Norm and welcome, Robbie. Jim Wegman recruited new member Bill Wilhelm. Welcome Bill. Lloyd Schaeffer recruited Greg Gustafson from the Nine Hole Couples League. Thanks Lloyd and welcome, Greg. The IronOaks Activities Open House was held on October 15 and the Niners table was manned by Joe Sigillo, Lloyd Schaeffer, John Gaudioso, Bill Pender, Bruce McCorkle, Dave Bauer and Jim Wegman. Bill Whitely, our resident artist, stopped by to admire the Niners logo sign he designed. The crew spoke with many golfers and their work has resulted in two new members. Bill Pender signed up his brother, Frank Pender, and we are pleased to welcome new member Frank White. Glad to have you in the league, guys.

New Local Rule – Ironwood: With the reopening of the Ironwood course on October 22, there are new local rules now being observed. Since there has been significant turf removal on a couple of holes and most turf was replaced with three quarter inch rock or decomposed granite, golfers should not attempt a stroke from these areas. This is especially true for the left side of Hole No. 1 on the hillside. In the areas where you find the three quarter inch rock, the new local rule will allow players to find their nearest point of relief and take a free drop. This new local rule is intended to help prevent injury to golfers or damage to their equipment. This same rule will apply in areas where large rocks were installed to facilitate drainage. Golfers are further advised that golf carts are prohibited from driving on any of the newly rocked areas or over any of the larger rock lines. Hole No. 17 has a desert area that now has a restricted driving rule. Carts are prohibited in the desert area below the green on Hole No. 17. Drivers are advised to use the cart path and the new roundabout parking area on the left side of the fairway to access the green.
