Return to Play After Overseed
After the overseed, MOGA members were excited to get back on the golf course. The removal of the cart path-only restriction was particularly welcome, making the game more enjoyable and leading to better scores. Members appreciated the relief to their knees, hips, and joints, and many commented on the excellent work done by Ross and the dedicated Oakwood team who once again revitalized the course.
Remembering Fred Smith
Fred Smith, who recently chaired the MOGA webmaster position after Aki Yasuda’s resignation, made significant contributions to the club. He greatly improved automation and technology, saving volunteers many hours each week and streamlining internal operations. Fred wrote over 2,000 lines of code and was always available, ensuring events ran smoothly, accurately, and with added enjoyment for everyone involved.
Last year, Fred shared his diagnosis of cancer but continued to work tirelessly for MOGA from his home in Saskatoon, even while undergoing difficult treatments. His dedication was remarkable.
Fred was much more than a devoted MOGA volunteer. He was a talented musician, hosting annual Christmas sing-alongs with his wife Linda, and was known to be an accomplished ballroom dancer. Professionally, he developed the first computerized election reporting process in Canada for CBC-TV and worked as both a computer and financial consultant.
Fred’s passion for travel took him to all 10 Canadian provinces, two territories, every American state, and 70 countries. He completed 10 marathons, including prestigious events like New York and the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon and achieved the status of Bridge Silver Life Master. Despite calling himself a “mediocre golfer,” his record—including four holes-in-one, shooting his age, and scoring below par—spoke to his skill.
Fred is survived by his wife Linda, two daughters, grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and admirers. He will be remembered for his warm smile and genuine humility towards everyone he met.
Rest in peace, Fred Smith. Yours was a life well lived
MOGA Christmas Party
The annual MOGA Christmas Party took place in the Oakwood ballroom on Dec. 5. One hundred forty members and guests enjoyed a delicious banquet featuring short rib or a vegetarian dish, catered by Stone & Barrel. Upon the final consummation of the gourmet victuals, music was fired up and attendees filled the dance floor for some time. Toes were tapping, booties were shakin’, and knees were a wigglin’. A grand time was had by all.
Ryder Cup Competition
Each year, Ironwood and Oakwood (IMGA and MOGA) engage in two days of friendly competition across their home courses. After the first day at Ironwood, MOGA faced a challenging start. However, on day two at Lakes/Palms, MOGA rallied to claim the IMGA/MOGA Ryder Cup trophy. While the trophy may not rival the Stanley Cup, it is certainly a step above participation ribbons or car wash coupons!
