Neighbors Who Care recently hosted its Caring for the Caregiver event, bringing together family caregivers for a morning of encouragement, education, and self-care.
The day began with a continental breakfast featuring breakfast burritos from Rita’s Burritos, followed by time for caregivers to connect with others who understand the challenges and rewards of caregiving.
Elaine Poker-Yount of Successful Aging AZ opened the program with a presentation on mental health, sharing practical self-care strategies and communication tips to help caregivers better manage stress and navigate difficult conversations.
Joan Marlow of Peaceful Easy Healing led attendees through simple breathing and movement exercises designed to reduce stress and restore both mind and body. Caregivers left with easy techniques they can use whenever they feel overwhelmed.
Monika Lukasiewicz, OTR/L, concluded the presentations by sharing her personal journey and the power of gratitude. Her inspiring message reminded everyone that gratitude can provide strength and hope, even during life’s most difficult seasons.
Each attendee received a commemorative mug featuring the reminder, “You can’t pour from an empty cup,” emphasizing the importance of caring for yourself while caring for others.
Guests also enjoyed chair massages provided by Dr. Peter R. Sutton and the team from Abundant Health Chiropractic, relaxing hand massages, and a fun flower pot painting activity, taking home a blooming plant as a reminder to nurture themselves.
A highlight of the event was the respite care provided by The Next Chapter, allowing caregivers to fully enjoy the morning while their loved ones were cared for in a safe and engaging environment.
Neighbors Who Care extends sincere thanks to the speakers, volunteers, and sponsors who made the event possible. Special appreciation goes to Amada Senior Care, Home Instead, Humana, and Sun Lakes United Methodist Church for their generous support.
Most importantly, we thank the caregivers who attended. Their compassion and dedication inspire our community every day, and we hope they left feeling refreshed, supported, and reminded that caring for themselves is an essential part of caring for others.
