For over a decade Sheila Bossio has shouldered the essential task of assigning pairings for the OLNGA’s weekly games. Sheila worked for 22 years as a real estate agent, during and after her husband’s 22 years of service in the U.S. Army. After moving to Sun Lakes from Olympia Washington in 2001, she began golfing the next year and volunteered to help with pairing in 2004. Her reliability and skill at this thankless task led to her becoming Pairings Chair and then Co-chair, the position she holds today. Along the way, with the support of the Board, Sheila began random pairings adjusted only for handicaps in order to ensure efficient, equitable and varied play. It is one of the league’s strengths that during a season members play with different golfers every week, creating an inclusive atmosphere.
Sheila’s extraordinary commitment to helping however she can has meant that each season she shares with another volunteer (currently Sally Spangler, who also produces the league’s handbook and co-chaired last year’s successful member/guest fund raiser) the weekly duties of organizing foursomes, changing them to reflect additions and cancellations and having them posted on the league’s website and communicated to the Pro Shop. Sheila also chaired the league’s tournament committee for three years. When not involved in this demanding activity, Sheila sings with the Sun Lakes Chorale and enjoys cooking for a family comprised of four children, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
On December 16 in a Criers’ Dice game (substitute par for your three worst holes) on the Palms, winners were: Flight 1: Nancy Heberling, Linda Talley, Kathy Chebuhar, Phyllis Madison, Cora Lathom-Levensky and Betty Perry; Flight 2: Helen Semple, Julie Schneider, Colleen Duke, Sheila Bossio, Susie Cook, Karen Kenyon and Bea Cannon; Flight 3: Julia Collier, Edna Joss, Dottie Meade, and Marian Greer
The 10 golfers who turned out on December 23 got an early Christmas present – chits were awarded to all participants! In a low net game on the Sonoran course Sharon Johnson and Bonnie Tasch tied for first, followed by Pat Stead and Rita Ginsburg. Scoring Chair Reggie Wegman was still feeling Christmas spirit on December 30 when all 17 players were awarded chits.
In a step aside scramble on January 6, Cora Lathom-Levensky, Reggie Wegman, Margaret Johns and Marian Greer came first; Julie Schneider, Linda Brock and Marcy Griffith second; Bonnie Tasch, Rita Ginsberg, Colleen Duke and Sharon Gale third.
Committees have begun working on preparations for the March 10 Member/Guest Tournament, a leprechaun themed fundraiser that will include breakfast, golf and lunch. The season wrap-up luncheon is scheduled for April 28, so save both dates.
During February and March the Niners will play at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings. Those who want to socialize stay for lunch at the Poolside Grill after golf. If you’d like to play nine holes with a friendly, supportive group of women please join us. You can learn more about the Oakwood Lady Niners by calling Barbara Stewart at 480-883-3008.
