Our new board members are Shirley Moore, president; Deb Maxwell, vice president; Nancy Hooke, treasurer; and Deb Walker, secretary. When you see these gals, please thank them for accepting their positions and offer any help you can. Running a league takes teamwork and lots of time.
Shirley, our new president, served as president of the Ironwood Ladies 9-Hole League. She takes her responsibility very seriously and wants to remind everyone that our league is a great organization and relies on volunteers to assist her in her position. If you want to get to know how our league runs and maintains its status, please volunteer when asked.
One task that is particularly difficult is organizing the game schedule for the playing year. This task has been done by our wonderful Joyce Parker for years and years. It takes lots of time and meetings to make sure our schedule does not conflict with the 18-Hole Ladies League who play on Tuesdays also. Another part of this task is to decide which games are played. Joyce has done a spectacular job.
Another one of our unsung heroes is Barb Stewart who has done the pairings for too many years. The job of putting teams together is not easy, especially with last-minute cancellations. There was never a problem when asking Barb to include one of us if we forgot to sign up. She was always willing to try to fit one of us into the schedule. And there never was a cross word or a snarky remark. Barb is truly a patient, kind, understanding Southern Belle!
Two more unsung heroes are Julie Collier and Kathy Chebuhar. Every score from every player from every appropriate game is put into a program, which keeps our handicaps current. These two ladies have been doing this tedious task for more years than I can remember. It is not an easy task trying to read some handwriting and fix simple arithmetic mistakes without stepping on toes. All of the above-mentioned tasks are examples of how many things go on behind the scenes. So many parts in keeping our league in good standing with AGA rules rely on all our volunteers.
The best way to learn about running our league is to get involved. The Social Committee can always use some help, as well as most of our committees. If you are not sure where your skills may lie, just ask Shirley. I am sure she will lead you in the right direction. And please refer to the OLNGA Handbook for directions on how to sign up or cancel.
