Now for a little local news:
Shirley, our new president, has lived in Arizona on and off for many years. Shirley was raised in Georgia, and she is one sweet Georgia peach! Shirley met the love of her life in 1966 in Georgia and married in 1967.
Mel was a family practice physician and had privileges in a hospital in Decatur, Ga., where Shirley was training to be a radiographic tech. Mel was born and raised in Arizona but attended med school in Kansas City. He also did a medical residency at Emory. They moved to Arizona in the Arcadia area in 1977 where they raised their family of four children. In 1994 they moved again, this time to Tempe where Mel worked for Cigna healthcare. Shirley went back to school and became a registered ultrasound technician. In the 1980s ultrasound became a very integral part of diagnosing many different diseases. She worked in healthcare for many, many years.
When their daughter Wendi graduated from med school in Tucson, they moved to Missouri to help her with her family. They lived in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Her daughter was offered a position in St. Louis, and that’s when Shirley and Mel moved back here to Oakwood in 2017, and they loved being here. Mel was an avid golfer and a very, very good one. Unfortunately, Mel passed away a few years ago. He was quite a character, and everyone was his friend. Mel was Shirley’s golf coach, and we know he did a terrific job, because Shirley is quite a good golfer also! Right after they moved here, they joined the 9-hole couples and made many great friends.
Shirley was president of the Ironwood Ladies 9-Hole League twice! And now we are so lucky to have her as our president. She always has a smile, and we love it when she calls us Darlin’, with that sweet, southern drawl.
By the way, Shirley’s favorite color is red, but she looks fabulous in anything. And her golf cart is Miss Scarlet! That is just perfect.
