OLNGA Upcoming Events

Reggie Wegman

The Arizona Golf Association State Medallion 9-hole winners are Joyce Parker, low gross, and Nancy Hooke, low net. The tournament will be held right here in Oakwood on the Sonoran course in January. Good luck, ladies! Details to follow.

There will be a Welcome Back coffee in the meeting room in the golf clubhouse. It starts at 9 a.m. on Nov. 4. Come to the meeting to say hello to our returning members, and bring along anyone who is interested in joining our league. All guests can play twice with the team as a test to see if they want to join our great group.

Our first luncheon will be held at Poolside Community Center on Nov. 11 directly after golf. The luncheon will be a taco bar: steak and chicken, corn and flour tortillas, and all the fixings, plus desert. The check is your reservation and is to be made out to OLNGA for $27. The check must be in the cabinet marked OLNGA by Nov. 4.

Congratulations to all the ladies who made it through our hot summer, playing under some very hard conditions. Now we can all look forward to playing in cooler weather. But remember, you still need to hydrate. Even though the temps are cooler, it is still very dry here.

It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of Sharon Gale, a longtime member of OLNGA. Sharon was a beautiful person and artist. She was responsible for the table decorations for the OLNGA luncheons and special events. She donated all the birdhouses that matched the holiday we were celebrating. Her Christmas birdhouses were particularly beautiful. She was born in Missouri and was one of the first women to serve in the Peace Corps. She served her time in the Philippines. She learned the language and was very proud of her service. Sharon was a caring friend and always had an encouraging word to lighten our spirits.

On another sad note, Susan Meer also passed away. Susan, also a longtime member of the OLNGA, moved from Oakwood back to Denver after her husband passed. Susan was born in Walla Walla, Wash. Susan was a psychologist and was very active in the AAUW organization, promoting women in careers and school scholarships.

Our condolences to their families.
